Good day to you... My friend, Vince, recently posted this notice.... I was immediately struck by Vince's honesty and courage to take this step. I was also positively impressed by his thoughtfulness to inform his circle of friends and associates.
Vince’s post led me to contemplate the bombardment and overstimulation we face daily in media spaces. I am not here to decry social media. Any tool can be used for positive or negative ends; however, personal observations attest to attendant, troublesome potential. Interestingly, we are seeing an increasing number of lawsuits which allege that these mediums are intrinsically over-powering, and significantly life-altering. And so, among other things, I wonder: 1. How mindful am I of walking the road of allure, to obsession, to desensitization, to possible addiction in social media spaces? 2. How caught up am I in trivial and mundane content or expressions? 3. How am I using the outlet(s) or platform(s) in a measured, uplifting way? 4. How timely are the sabbaticals that I take to promote my mental and overall health? 5. To what extent is my self-definition or self-esteem tied to media posts or footprints? 5. What steps am I taking to be a more mindful user (such that ’the dog wags the tail’, and not the reverse)? 6. How discriminate am I in ensuring that the items which I consume, post, or forward are valid, reliable, and valuable? How might the content make me and others better? 7. All in all, what does my usage say about who I am? What does it say about who I am becoming? www.davidmcadam.ca #socialmedia #fomo #mentalhealth
